Basic House Wiring in Nepal
Electrical System in Nepal
Single Phase wiring is the most common wiring used for our homes and residential buildings. It consists of 2 wires. One wire is Live or some time called as phase wire and the other one is Neutral. These 2 wires come from the distribution transformer to the energy meter. Single phase wiring has:-
- Supply Voltage: 230V
- Frequency: 50 Hz
- System: Single Phase (Residential)
- Wire Type: Copper (Recommended)
Main Components of House Wiring
House wiring needs many components. Among them some belongs Service Line (From NEA). The representative of NEA do the very fist task. That is to connect the live and neutral wire from the electrical pole to the energy meter. You should have the following equipments.
- Electric pole supply
- Energy Meter
- Main Switch / Main MCB
Distribution Board (DB)
From here Electrician job starts. You will have verity of MCB. You have to choose right one based on your needs. some available MCB are as follows:-
- Main MCB (6A–63A)
- RCCB / ELCB (30mA)
- Sub MCBs:
- Light circuit
- Socket circuit
- Kitchen circuit
- Water pump
- Heater / Geyser
Wire Color Codes (Nepal)
For wire, You can get different color option. You can select particular color for particular task. here you can see some few color types wire.
| Wire | Color | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Phase (Live) | Red / Brown | Power Supply |
| Neutral | Black / Blue | Return Path |
| Earth (Ground) | Green | Safety |
Never mix wire colours incorrectly.
Common Wire Sizes
Wire has many variations. Different size wire is used in different area. if we ignore size of wire for their uses, it won't work properly.
| Application | Wire Size |
|---|---|
| Lights & Fans | 1.0 – 1.5 sq.mm |
| Socket Outlets | 2.5 sq.mm |
| Heater / Geyser | 4.0 sq.mm |
| Main Supply | 6 – 10 sq.mm |
Basic Wiring Connections
Light Point
Phase → Switch → Light
Neutral → Direct to Light
Earth → Light Body
Plug Socket
Phase → MCB → Socket (L)
Neutral → Socket (N)
Earth → Socket (E)
Earthing (Grounding)
- Use GI or Copper earth rod
- Depth: 6–8 feet
- Earth resistance: below 5 ohms
- Connect to sockets, metal bodies, and DB
Poor earthing can cause electric shock.
Safety Devices
- MCB – Overload & short circuit protection
- RCCB / ELCB – Shock protection
- Proper earthing
- Avoid loose connections
- Use correct wire size
Wiring Methods in Nepal
- Concealed conduit wiring (Modern)
- Surface wiring (Old houses)
Sample House Circuit
- Light Circuit – 6-10A MCB
- Socket Circuit – 16A MCB
- Kitchen Circuit – 20A MCB
- Geyser Circuit – 25–32A MCB
Important Tips
- Switch OFF main supply before work
- Use approved quality materials
- Provide separate circuit for heavy load
- Consult a licensed electrician if unsure
✅ Safe wiring ensures safety and reliability.
